Harima Fudoki: A Record of Ancient Japan Reinterpreted, Translated, Annotated, and with Commentary
Edwina Palmer
"Harima no Kuni Fudoki (hereafter Harima Fudoki for short) is a unique
manuscript, and is one of Japan’s earliest extant large-scale written records
(See Plate 1). It is a rich description of the people, places, landscape, natural
resources, local products and folk stories of Harima Province in western Japan.
Produced around 714 CE by the newly emergent Japanese government as a tool
for early state formation, Harima Fudoki includes important myths and leg-
ends about local gods and place names that offer a different perspective from
those of the better-known ‘national’ chronicles, Kojiki (712 CE) and Nihon Shoki
(720 CE).
